Forests and Lakes – For People – Forever ®

Around Town

Outside of the Downeast Lakes Community Forest, there are numerous places to visit in the charming village of Grand Lake Stream.

The Grand Lake Stream Historic Museum
Owned and run by the all-volunteer Grand Lake Stream Historical Society, the GLS Historic Museum has a fantastic collection of local artifacts, regional photographs, and nostalgic memorabilia of the Downeast Lakes region. Not to be missed is the “Hall of Guides,” a building dedicated to the many Registered Maine Guides from years past. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the museum is open on Sundays from 1-3 pm. They will also open up by appointment.

Grand Lake Stream Fish Hatchery
Operated by Maine Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, the Grand Lake Stream Fish Hatchery was established in 1936. Water for the facility is supplied by West Grand Lake through a single intake system. Water is treated and gravity-fed to 14 covered raceways. Species reared at the Grand Lake Stream facility include landlocked salmon and brook trout. The United States government first opened a fish hatchery at Grand Lake Stream in 1875, making it one of the oldest sites of fish hatchery activities in the country. Call (207) 796 – 5580 for site visits, or more information.

Grand Lake Stream Folk Art Festival
An annual event, held in the heart of Grand Lake Stream, that highlights dozens of local artisans and crafters, musicians, food vendors, and more! Held on the last weekend in July.

Grand Lake Stream, America – 4th of July
A day filled with Americana fun, consisting of a 5k race, parade, horseshoe tournament, frog races, and other family activities. Held every 4th of July.

Grand Lake Stream Congregational Church
Located on Church Street, services are offered seasonally at 9 am on Sundays.

Middle Walk and The Canal
A lovely, wooded walkway alongside the canal that remains from the Shaw Brothers Tannery that was closed in the early 1900s. Each year, the canal is stocked with brook trout for children’s fishing only (ages 15 and under), offering a great chance for local and visiting youth to experience Grand Lake Stream fishing at its finest!

Tennis and Basketball Courts
These courts are open to the public, and offer a great place to strike up a game in town.
