HIKING TRAILS

Little Mayberry Cove Trail

In 2006, the trust completed construction of our first hiking trail, a 2.6 mile route along the western shoreline of West Grand Lake.  The trail begins at the village of Grand Lake Stream and follows moderately rolling terrain through mossy stands of hemlocks and pines, ending at a quiet cove.  Hikers can return on the same trail or loop back via interior logging roads.  MAP and BROCHURE

Pocumcus Lake Trail

Our newest trail provides options for short or moderate loop hikes to the undeveloped shoreline of Pocumcus Lake. The trail traverses a wide range of forest habitats, increasing opportunities to see and hear wildlife. The shorter loop is a hike of 1.3 miles round trip, while those who hike the entire trail will cover 3.6 miles. Hikers should expect a rough footpath. The trailhead is located on the north side of the Fourth Lake Road about 7.5 miles west of Grand Lake Stream. MAP

The Downeast Lakes Water Trail project is focused on improving camping opportunities for boaters. Five campsites were rehabilitated in 2006, and three were added in 2007.  The sites were chosen to offer a pleasant experience and sites positioned to offer safe stopping points for boaters on the big lakes.  These campsites on the Farm Cove Community Forest will make it possible for boaters to enjoy point to point or loop trips along the region's lakes and the Machias River.  Water trail brochures with a map are available at the land trust office or the Pine Tree Store

Copies of brochures for each trail, with a map, are available at the DLLT office or the Pine Tree Store in Grand Lake Stream.

Public Access Policy Statement for the Farm Cove Community Forest

The Downeast Lakes Land Trust will assure public access across the 27,080-acre Farm Cove property that it owns for traditional recreational uses to include fishing, hunting, trapping, guiding, camping, picnicking, swimming, boating, snowmobiling, ATV-ing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, dog sledding, hiking, nature observation, and enjoyment of open space.

All Terrain Vehicles (ATV) Land Use Policy for the Farm Cove Community Forest

ATV riders are welcome on DLLT land.  DLLT extends this privilege to all users of registered ATVs (as defined by the State of Maine), who are expected to follow Maine State laws, to treat the land with respect and care, and to ride without endangering others or causing damage to trails.  Some trails may be closed to ATVs during mud season or timber harvesting and other management activities.  All of these adopted policies and practices will be conducted in a manner that is responsible and protective of wildlife habitat.  Abuse of the land will result in revocation of the privilege to operate on DLLT lands.
