Forest Management Activity Since 2005:
·
Annual
harvest plans have been developed with silvicultural and
wildlife habitat prescriptions. Timber
harvest began in 2005.
Two local contracting companies have harvested timber on the
community
forest.
· A
permit system for local uses has been developed, including
firewood, evergreen tipping, and gravel.
· Roads:
Signs have been installed to identify major roads. Maintenance
work has included roadside brush
removal, improved drainage,
replacement of culverts, and grading.
· Acquired
new aerial photography and developed new timber stand maps.
· Created
eight wildlife habitat plantings, and planted 1000 black spruce
seedlings donated by Washington
County Conservation Club, 600
American chestnut trees donated by the Maine Chapter of The
American
Chestnut Foundation and seeded several acres with a
herbaceous plant mixture for wildlife forage.
· Began
landscape-scale habitat management coordination effort with
biologists from Maine Bureau of Parks
and Lands, Department of
Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and Passamaquoddy Tribes.
